Paul R. Lieggi

Paul R. Lieggi, 66, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on August 3, 2024, following a short battle with cancer. Born in Princeton, New Jersey, Paul was one of those rare individuals who always knew what he wanted to be when he grew up; in his case, an attorney. He attended John Marshall Law School in Chicago, contributed to Law Review, and received his Juris Doctor (JD) degree in 1982. After graduating law school, Paul became the protégé of a local attorney and inherited his practice in 1989, opening Lieggi Law Offices, LLC which focused on the legal issues confronting small and mid-size businesses and the families who operate them. That same year, he and his then wife welcomed their first and only child, Daniela Elizabeth Lieggi. Paul balanced family and business life—cheering his daughter on at her various sporting events, helping with homework (be it 4th grade geography or AP Language & Composition), and being an ever-playful and supportive presence in his daughter’s life, all while he simultaneously built a business to sustain his family. In 2008, he met his partner of 16 years, Beth Gaby. He loved and coveted her massive curly hair (often giggling that he wanted some for himself). He was her consummate chef. They traveled extensively, sipped wine, loved, and laughed during those special years. In October of 2023, Paul became Assistant General Counsel for the Holsten Companies, a real estate development team devoted to the principle that everyone deserves affordable, quality housing. Pride and excitement shone through his voice when he spoke about his latest professional endeavor. After spending more than 40 years in the city of Chicago, he considered himself a native, although he retained the traces of an east coast accent, especially when asking for a glass of water —or as he would pronounce it, “wooder.” The son of professional chefs, he inherited his parents’ skill and love for cooking along with a repertoire of family recipes from Italy. Friends and family fondly remember the delicious meals he made. He was an avid foodie who loved finding new restaurants. He was not shy to ask chefs for their secrets or offer advice in return. In one instance, being so bold as to bring one of his favored restaurants a multi-pound container of berries he had procured from a local farmer’s market, which he was sure would complement their panna cotta dessert. Those who knew him will remember the twinkle he’d get in his eyes when he smiled or his impassioned expression of his opinions and beliefs. Predeceased by his parents Ennio & Gina Ruberto Lieggi, brother-in-law George Martinez, sister-in-law Eileen Lieggi, and niece Kimberly Lieggi. Paul is survived by his beloved partner Beth Gaby and daughter Daniela Elizabeth Lieggi; siblings Joseph Lieggi and wife Patricia, Ennio “JR” Lieggi, Peter Lieggi, and Anna Maria Lieggi; and nieces Michelle Lieggi, Rachel Dlabik and husband Eddie, and Alexandra Martinez. In respect of Paul’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. You are invited to privately honor his memory in your own ways.
