John Buehler

John Henze Buehler, M.D., 1/9/1941-7/6/2025; of Glenview, formerly of Evanston; was surrounded by family before his sudden passing. Born and raised in New Haven, CT and Seattle, WA, John graduated from Oberlin College and Duke University Medical School. After one year of residency at Northwestern, he served for three years in the Navy including a year in Vietnam. After resuming his residency and completing a fellowship in pulmonary medicine, he joined two other physicians in private practice and subsequently expanded that practice to five, serving the Northwestern community through a variety of roles including teaching first-year medical students. John’s love for our blue planet took him all over the world SCUBA diving, and he shared that passion with his children and granddaughter on numerous family trips. He was a strong advocate for our great National Parks and visited many of them. Spending time at his cottage in Keshena, WI provided him with great joy and continuing appreciation and passion for the outdoors. His love of our natural world extended to the Cosmos where, as a Star Trek fan, he always wanted to “go where no one had gone before”. After retiring in 2006, he continued to serve students and patients by volunteering at two Chicago community clinics and also teaching at NU. Beloved husband of 42 years to Bonnie Faye Buehler (nee Leander). Loving father of John Robison (Stacy Pushkar) Buehler of Skokie, IL, Alison Fleetwood Buehler of Brooklyn, NY, and Carl Leander Buehler of Glenview, IL. Adoring grandfather of Laken Julia Buehler. Faithful companion of Loki and Cosmo the German Shepherds. Preceded in death by brother Charles Buehler and parents Charles “Jerry” and Carlene (nee Henze) Buehler.
