Alan Charles Schoen

May 6, 1938 - February 4, 2022

Alan Charles Schoen, 83, passed away peacefully at home in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood on February 4, 2022. Born in Jackson, MI, Al graduated from Chicago’s DePaul Academy and earned his B.A. in English from Loyola University before embarking on a 35-year career as a corporate insurance broker with Marsh (formerly Marsh & McLennan). Upon retirement in 2000, Al happily settled into his position as CEO of Hoyne Acres. After the untimely death of his wife Mary in 2002, the third act of Al’s life revolved around service. A tireless volunteer at the Common Pantry, he shuttled donations from grocery stores, stocked shelves, and served clients. As a volunteer officer of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for over a decade, he saw that clients in need were connected with funding for rent, utilities, and other needs. A faithful member of St. Benedict’s Parish, Al attended daily mass and offered his time and financial support. Often commended for his examples of humility and humor as a “servant leader,” he was honored in 2016 with the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Christifidelis award. Loving husband of the late Mary Angela Schoen (nee Penkala) with whom he enjoyed many cruise vacations, three poodles, and 33 years of marriage. Devoted father of Cecily Sheppard (Gregory) and Valerie Schoen, DVM (Kenneth Swiatkowski, DVM). Proud grandfather of Hazel Leeanne Sheppard. Dear brother of Kathryn Michas (Nicholas), brother-in-law of Therese Schoen. Also preceded in death by parents John William Schoen and Cecelia Mary Schoen (nee Kalvelage); siblings John W. Schoen II (Carol) and Ruth Caboor (Raymond), and Donald Schoen; and sister-in-law Dolores Penkala. Visitation Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 9:30 A.M. until time of Mass at 11:00 A.M. at St. Benedict’s Parish, 2115 W. Irving Park Rd, Chicago, 60618. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to St. Benedict’s Parish, https://parish.stbenedict.com/ or to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, https://stvincentdepaulchicago.org/.
