Jennifer Ingerson

Jennifer Mullen Ingerson, 61, of Chicago's Uptown neighborhood, passed away in peace September 28, 2025. Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, Jennifer graduated from Oakwood High School in Ohio, later earning her bachelor's at the University of Massachusetts in 2018. For four decades she lived as a member of the Jesus People intentional living community, also working as a bookkeeper at Cornerstone Community Outreach, and tutoring ESL students at Truman College. Recently, she completed her linguistics coursework at Oxford University. Her thesis was well underway before her death. Loving mother of Anna (partner Fallon Braddy) Ingerson, Nathan Ingerson, and Isaac Ingerson. Cherished sister of Anne Chlovechok, Elizabeth "Liz" (Phil) Marr, Virginia Seubert, John (Karie) Mullen, and Alex (Holly Overmiller) Mullen. Daughter of the late Eugene Cooper Mullen and Marian Terese Mullen (nee Finn). Jennifer was an incredibly supportive mother who always prioritized her kids, making time to help them with whatever they needed, whether it be teaching them new skills, aiding them in projects, or handmaking them gifts. She stood up for the education of her kids, and fought to keep them healthy and well. Her parenting was instrumental in forming them into the people they would become. She provided them the tools to approach life's challenges, and inspired them to create art, seek beauty, and experience joy as often as possible. Not only a wonderful parent, Jennifer also showed love to others beyond her family. She easily connected with new people, and dedicated herself to maintaining every relationship in her life. Between her friends, her community, and her church, she cared for all of them and more. Everywhere she went, she won the hearts of those around her; her ESL students who adored her, the hospital staff who tended to her in her sickness, and even a stranger in a plaza in Peru, with whom she spent hours talking. Jennifer was passionate in all she did. That passion showed in her musical ability, her pursuit of language, and her admiration of nature. From a young age she developed her skill playing the fiddle, and carried on to perform as a member of a band, The Crossing, for 30 years. She understood the craft of written word deeply, both a capable writer and avid reader. She chose to devote herself entirely to linguistic study and communicating with others in as many languages as she could possibly learn. This all originates from her love of people, life, and the Earth itself. Nature was more than a simple joy to Jennifer. Without hesitating, she made personal sacrifices to conserve and respect it, and taught others to do the same. She always deliberately visited beautiful places for their own sake. She would walk to the water of the lake near her home, gather stones and fossils she found, watch birds living in serenity, and look to the moon in all its phases. Jennifer was a precious, magnificent person who lived without compromise. She left all who knew her better and more loving.
